Ruapehu Alpine Lifts has launched a new initiative to connect local owners and landlords with winter employees in need of accommodation ahead of the 2022 ski season.
Called Turns for Tenants, it is inspired by similar programs run by ski areas in North America.
The program will provide landlords with incentives for renting accommodation to RAL employees, whether it is a room, unit, guesthouse or entire home.
Once landlords apply to the program, RAL will connect landlords with employees looking for rentals.
Owners who qualify for the incentive will be able to choose between a season pass, a day pass package or a $500 gift certificate to use on the ski slopes of Mount Ruapehu.
RAL’s chief operating officer, Travis Donoghue, said the scheme was born out of difficulties in providing accommodation for their seasonal workers, due to a housing shortage.
“While we have worked hard to provide housing for our own employees, the continued shortage means we have had to think differently this year,” Donoghue said.
He said the availability of additional housing would encourage affordability and accessibility in the community, so both landlords and employees had something to gain from the program.
Requests have already been received from landlords and owners.
