PLANS to convert a guest house in Barrow into a multiple occupancy house (HMO) for up to 13 people have been approved.
A proposal to convert 179 Abbey Road into an HMO has been given the green light by Barrow Borough Council.
179 Abbey Road currently operates as a 12 bedroom guest house, with rooms available to book on the ground floor, first floor and second floor.
According to the design and access statement, the owners and managers of the guest house live in a private residential apartment located on the ground floor and basement.
The statement reveals that a change of use was granted in 1983 from a dwelling house to a mixed-use private dwelling and a hotel residence which has remained to this day.
The proposed HMO is for 13 people: three on the ground floor, four on the first floor, five on the second floor and one in the basement.
The proposal is to restore eight rooms on the second floor and return to the original four-room layout, with three of the rooms to be used as en-suite bedrooms and one as a kitchen for the exclusive use of the proposed second floor tenants.
Each room offered should contain a work space with a fridge and cupboard below for reduced demand in the kitchen. All rooms offered must be significantly larger than the license requirement for a double room, according to the plans.
No extension to the property is proposed, and no part of the building is proposed for removal.
