Plans submitted to convert Barry’s former hotel into accommodation for the homeless

A proposal has been put forward to turn a former hotel in Barry into temporary accommodation for the homeless.

Vale of Glamorgan Council has received a planning application to convert the former Olive Lodge Hotel, next to Brynhill Barry Golf Club, into accommodation which would provide 10 studio apartments.

A covering letter attached to the planning application states that the aim of the development is to “address the immediate need for this type of housing in the area”.

Planning permission was granted for the building – Number 2, Port Road East – to be converted from an old people’s residence to a guesthouse in 1990. The current application is not the first time that a proposal is filed to change the use of the building.

A proposal was made to the council in 2013 to demolish the hotel and build a new hostel for the homeless. However, this was refused.

A request for a change of use was submitted in 2016 to transform the hotel into a nursery for children – this was withdrawn.

Shortly after, another request which proposed the demolition of the guest house to make way for new houses was denied.

In 2017, a request was again refused. Plans have been submitted to council for the demolition of the building to make way for two townhouses.

According to Stats Wales, the number of temporarily housed households from January to March 2021 in the Vale of Glamorgan was 225. Most of these households – 102 – were temporarily housed in bed and breakfasts.

Data from Stats Wales also shows that between January and March 2020 the total number of temporarily housed households in the Vale was 132. From January to March 2019 the figure was 111.

In February this year, a report by the Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet found that the county needed 917 new rental homes each year.

The application to convert the former Olive Lodge hotel into interim accommodation also includes plans for the construction of a one-storey rear extension to the building and the addition of a new dormer window to the existing roof.
