Owners are waiting for the right buyer for Pen-y-bryn Lodge

Oamaru’s most exclusive boutique lodge is for sale.

James Glucksman and James Boussy have owned Pen-y-bryn Lodge for nearly 13 years and are trying to plan the next stage of their lives by listing the big house.

They were in the process of building a new home in Kakanui and knew selling the New Zealand Heritage Grade 1 listed house would not be a quick process, Mr Glucksman said.

“We think there’s a time when we’ll be too old to continue doing what we’ve been doing, the way we love to do.

“It’s not going to be a quick thing to find the right person to own this house and take it over, so we thought we’d start things now, while we’re still energetic…and just kind of give us the time to find the right kind of person.”

They wanted to be able to complete the sale in a “serene and serene” way and thought it was better to test the market now, rather than delay it.

The 830 sq m late Victorian single storey house Towey St is listed by Sotheby’s International Realty and was built in 1889. It has seven bedrooms, four bathrooms, five suites and two garages, all located on a property of 5,000 m².

Five bedrooms serve as guest rooms and the other two are the owners’ quarters, as well as three large living areas, a dining room, two shower rooms and fitness areas.

The house had been extensively renovated by MM. Glucksman and Boussy.

There were too many things they loved about the house to list, Mr Glucksman said.

“It’s a beautiful place… You never get tired of space, and it really is a wonderful place to call home.

“Plus…it’s been a really good deal, and we’ve had countless wonderful guests that have come, and a lot of people that have become friends. It’s a very desirable lifestyle.”

Mr Glucksman said they wanted to make sure the new owner would treat the place “as it deserves to be treated”.

Construction of their home was due to be completed between Christmas 2023 and Easter 2024, and the couple would happily commute between the two properties until the right new owners arrive, he said.
