Located in the shadow of one of North Routt County’s most famous peaks, Hahn’s Peak Roadhouse, which caters to visitors and locals alike, has a new owner.

“We just closed it earlier this month, so we’re really learning what we have,” said Chris Jones, who bought the business on September 1 from Darren and Carroll Zamzow. “We want to see what is working well, and then we’re also going to look at things that we can improve. “

The Roadhouse, which will be renamed Steamboat Lake Outpost over the next few months, will continue to offer accommodations, guided outdoor adventures, rentals and meals. Jones also owns Vista Verde Ranch, a luxury ranch in Clark.

“I think our goal is really to create a space where people can come together and connect with their friends, neighbors and family,” said Katie Grosso, director of Hahn’s Peak Roadhouse. “It will definitely be family-oriented, and we just want to create a positive influence for our employees, our neighbors and everyone who walks through the door. This is our vision.

Jones echoed this sentiment and said his goal is to provide a high level of customer service while creating an environment that fosters community and connection.

“Darren and Carol, the people we bought it from, are wonderfully nice people,” Jones said. “They just wanted a new chapter in their lives, so it was an exciting opportunity for us to take this property.”

Jones has had great success with Vista Verde but added that he’s not trying to replicate what he has there. But he wants to extend the employee culture to his new company. Grosso will continue as a director and look after customer services, and Ben Simms, managing director of Vista Verde, will oversee the staff and lead the business going forward.

“I think we are really excited about what this is going to become and what it can bring to our guests, staff and the wider North Routt community,” said Simms. “We’re just trying to balance providing a compelling experience for visitors to the region while honoring our neighbors and improving relationships with our neighbors.”

Simms and Jones said many changes, including the name change, won’t begin until mid-December. The plan is for the business to remain open and operational until early November. The Roadhouse will close from November 8 to December 11, when it will reopen for the winter season with full catering, bar, accommodation and activities under its new name.

In addition to the 2,000 square foot restaurant and bar and general store, the business also includes a six-room motel, as well as eight cabins.

Jones said the property is attractive as Hahns Peak is located directly behind the Roadhouse and Steamboat Lake is a short walk from the property. It is also surrounded by streams, ponds and nature.

“We’re excited about some of the things that we’re moving forward with in terms of ideas to make it an experience where people can come and have a good time,” Jones said. “It is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen in the world.

“The summer is obviously huge, and in the fall you have the changing aspens,” Jones added. “Then in the winter, when you have incredible snowfall, it offers the possibility of snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and cross-country skiing. “

He and his management team are also thrilled with the opportunity to recreate the culture that can be found just down the street in Vista Verde.

“(It’s) a culture of service leadership, real high quality service,” Gross said. “Taking care of people is an important part of our mission, and we really want to bring that to The Outpost and create that here. We are really excited to have the opportunity to be more part of the community.
