Distillery owners put Lake Tahoe estate up for sale

A sprawling waterfront resort on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe has hit the market for $55 million.

Known as the Wovoka estate, it is owned by Christopher and Camille Bently, owners of Bently Heritage Distillery, which is closing in Minden, Nevada. The nearly 5-acre property in Glenbrook near Zephyr Cove includes six structures – the main house, two guest houses, a waterfront studio and two “tree forts”. The complex is actually the combination of two separate properties, which the owners bought and combined in 2013.

The main house was designed by famed architect Theodore Brown, who used geometric design to create what he calls “the impressionist mountain design style,” according to listing agent Clif Chase. The house has three bedrooms, a wine cellar, a theater and a great room with a huge stone fireplace and 19-foot high windows that overlook the lake.

The property also includes its own private sandy beach, a stone boathouse with two lifts, three buoys and a breakwater jetty with a private jetty, which creates the feeling of a private bay, Chase said. There is also a waterfall and stream on the grounds, as well as a saltwater infinity pool.

“This property has it all,” Chase said. “Wovoka means being in harmony with nature, and it really shows in how it all blends in with the natural environment.”

Property records show the adjacent sites were purchased for $20.9 million and $4.95 in 2013.

Chase said the property is likely to appeal to a luxury buyer looking for a Tahoe retreat. Being on the “East Shore” has its perks, he said, including being able to take advantage of Nevada’s sunsets and tax advantages.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Bentlys once split their time between the Glenbrook estate and a home in San Francisco, but moved to Scotland. While the couple still plans to spend time in San Francisco, they are putting the Nevada distillery up for sale, according to the couple’s rep.

The couple are also selling their ranch outside the city of Minden, known as Bently Ranch, for $100 million.
