Ana de Armas goes ‘blonde’, ‘Reservation Dogs’ finale, keeping Venice afloat, reliving Iran hostage crisis, ‘Abbott’ vs. Charter School

Ana de Armas performs a remarkable transformation as Marilyn Monroe in the controversial Netflix Blond. FX/Hulu Reservation dogs ends its second season with a moving road trip. The documentaries include a Nova report on efforts to save Venice from sinking and a two-night HBO special revisiting the Iranian hostage crisis of 1979-1981. Abbott Elementary School goes to a nearby charter school and tries not to lose hope.

This blonde is definitely not having fun anymore. No more than the cinephile of Andrew Dominik’s exhausting plunge into psychosexual misery, whose main asset is Ana de Armas (Knives out), heartbreaking and breathtaking as she amazingly transforms into movie icon Marilyn Monroe. Some 60 years after her premature death at 36, Marilyn continues to fascinate, and if Blond (based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, and certainly not a mainstream biopic) accentuates the cruelty and abuse suffered by former Norma Jeane while retaining her glamorous Hollywood sex symbol persona, de Armas mostly maintains her dignity with a emotionally engaged performance. Bobby Cannavale (as baseball legend Joe DiMaggio) and Adrien Brody (as sensitive playwright Arthur Miller) are the main “dad” figures in his troubled romantic life. If writer-director Dominik had matched his star in restraint, Blond might not feel such an ordeal to go through.
