The Lighthouse Suite at Saybrook Point Resort and Marina offers vacationers a private stay at the end of the resort’s docks with a panoramic view of where the Connecticut River meets the Long Island Sound. While the lighthouse was never operational, the room has the authentic feel of a New England lighthouse.

The property has belonged to the Tagliatela family for over 30 years. However, the resort hasn’t always been the unique coastal stay it is now, said Candace Engdall, director of marketing for Saybrook Point Resort.

“When the family bought this property in the 1980s, it needed repairs,” Engdall said. “It was run down and we knew it was a shady place; it needed some work.

According to the resort’s history on its site, Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack were regulars at the resort before the Tagliatela family purchased the property. Back then it was known as Terra Mar Resort and Yacht Basin, and it was eventually raided by the FBI in 1975 for being an illegal gambling site.

Shortly after the Tagliatelas acquired the resort, construction began on the Old Saybrook property, turning it into the guest houses, two vacation villas and 102 guest rooms that make up the resort today. However, the original construction did not include the Lighthouse Suite with the intention of renting it out to guests.

“While the family was renovating Mrs. Tagliatela wanted a small beach house so they built the Lighthouse Suite at the end of the docks for her to stay in while they did the work so she would have her little space on the beach. water,” Engdall said.

When the hotel became operational, the family transformed their own private one-bedroom suite into a unique opportunity for guests to stay in a New England lighthouse. Today, the suite is available from May through October, though Engdall says it’s usually booked from Memorial Day through late September. She said the suite attracts many visitors who return to the resort year after year to stay in the Lighthouse Room.

“You’re right there, right on the water. There are boats around, but you’re right at the edge of the wharf, Engdall said. “You really get that experience of the coastline, the salty air, the hot summer nights, and the sunsets and sunrises – whether you stay in the main resort or the Lighthouse suite – are spectacular.”
